Drawing My Way Through Gilmore Girls

Updated: Feb 6, 2023

It's officially Fall. And guess what my Instagram feed has been full of? Gilmore Girls! Everywhere I turn. Netflix. Artist accounts. Personal friends. It's that Fall season ambiance, I guess. Well, it's been the perfect enabler for me - the biggest Gilmore Girls fan you'll ever meet. I've been inspired to watch Gilmore Girls for the 30th time.

Actually, I've lost count of how many times I've watched Gilmore Girls. I lost count years ago. But I do remember watching it for the first time with my Mom and Grandma when I was in third grade - around 2006 or 2007. My Grandma bought all seven seasons on DVD. I think my Mom still has the box sets, with one disc from Season 5 missing just as it has been for the last 10 years.

I don't remember when my sister and I started it, but we made a goal every summer to watch all seven seasons together. For a while, we'd watch them on the family laptop, and then I got a little DVD player for my birthday and then a laptop of my own. I can vividly remember sitting on my bed with my sister watching episode after episode. We had the little booklets that came with the box sets. And they had a summary for each episode, plus a few of the pop culture references.

And then, miracle of miracles, they put the whole show on Netflix! That was around my Junior year, and it was so amazing to have them all at my fingertips without having to change DVD's out every four episodes. By that time, I knew it well enough to have it on in the background and not have to pay all that much attention to know what was going on. And I've done that ever since. Soooooooo...I don't know how many times I've watched it.

In 2016, Netflix did it's reboot: A Year in the Life. My sister and I binged all four episodes the day it dropped. And I cried. Literally. I'm not ashamed. It was my childhood and my teenhood. And now my young adulthood. It will continue to be a huge part of my life.

So, I've started a new project, inspired by Kadi Miller (@kadimiller) on Instagram. She's reading her way through Gilmore Girls, reading every book referenced or mentioned in the whole series. I'm very impressed. That's a commitment. My project won't be quite so involved, but it's similar. I'm drawing my way through Gilmore Girls. I'm going to pick out my favorite quotes from every episode and illustrate them.

I'm super excited! I think it will be so much fun to rewatch and write down my favorite moments! Stay tuned!
